Arts

Flow Festival joins forces with Forum Box Gallery. As a result of the collaboration Suvilahti will see large-scale and impressive video installations by Pasi Rauhala, Timo Wright and Juhana Moisander. The installations will be projected onto both the internal and external walls of the buildings on the festival grounds. The works in question have been commissioned for Flow Festival, and their impressive implementation is realised in cooperation with Bright Finland and Barco video projectors, which they represent.

Flow artistic partner Forum Box is a non-profit artist-run co-operative society, which was initiated in 1996. Its main purpose is to maintain an art space in Helsinki in order to enrich and support the Finnish cultural life. Currently Forum Box co-op has over 80 artist members, all of which are prominent Finnish artists and actors in the field of contemporary art.

In addition to the Forum Box collaboration, Young Designer of the Year Laura Väinölä will build an interactive shrine in the renewed Backyard area.

Description

The Suvilahti festival area houses 11 different venues for Flow Festival including massive outdoor and tent stages for thrilling and atmospheric spectacles as well as cosy indoor and outdoor venues for more intimate moments. The Main Stage is fit to entertain the complete festival capacity of 25 000 people, while the smaller stages are suited for audiences of less than a thousand festival goers. Take a closer look below.

Main Stage

All roads lead to the Main Stage that dominates the center of the festival area. This primary stage is located at the core of the Flow environment, and is reachable or visible from almost every part of Suvilahti. The classic outdoor Main Stage has seen some of the brightest stars of the global music scene and been the epicenter of unforgettable Flow discoveries. In 2017 Main Stage is even bigger than ever and the renewed sound system creates spectacular musical experience to the festival crowd.

Lapin Kulta Red Arena

This summer Flow Festival brings an unprecedentedly enormous stage tent to Finland. With a capacity of 15 000 people, Lapin Kulta Red Arena doubles the size of the former second stage Lapin Kulta Blue Tent. The flagship tent by manufacturer Kayam is 75 meters wide and rises up to 20 meters. This means that Lapin Kulta Red Arena’s size can be compared to the size of our main stage at Flow Festival. Bars, tables and sitting areas are situated in the audience area surrounding the tent.

Bright Balloon 360° Stage

Bright Balloon 360° is the beating heart of the Flow Festival. The stage was born four years ago as the result of an architecture competition and has since become one of the festival’s hallmarks. The stage is like a whole planet of its own where the atmosphere is always enchanting and intimate, and offers festival goers goosebump-inducing performance spectacles. This year the stage is being reinvented, its seated capacity growing by a whopping 1000 seats. However, we recommend the guests to arrive early to the popular venue to guarantee the best gig experience possible. Bright Balloon 360° is the namesake venue of Bright Finland.

Black Tent

The compact and cozy Black Tent is known for its palpable atmosphere. Top billing artists fill up the tent with music fans year to year, so we recommend that festival goers make their way to the Black Tent events with time to spare for the best seats in the house. This year the environment of the Black Tent expands with a brand new, gorgeous food bazaar area accompanied by the latest venue addition, Zalando Factory. Also, the more spacious area makes it more convenient to enter and exit the Black Tent.

Voimala

Voimala, the “power plant” of Suvilahti, is the largest of the industrial structures in the area. The wide open, thousand-square-meter hall has the distinction of serving as the Flow Festival’s official sanctuary for electronic beats. The somberly decorated, laser-strewn space creates the perfect conditions for contemporary electronic rhythms, a staple of the festival.

Resident Advisor Backyard

If you have a wander through the festival area you’re likely to come across the welcoming garden area behind the Voimala building and the gigantic nearby gasometers. The legendary Resident Advisor Backyard once more supplies electronic music enthusiasts with a headquarters, surrounded by impressive factory edifices, where people can feel the pampering effects of club music and chill vibes. The Backyard teems with a sensual ambience, just hidden enough from the bustle of the festival’s many stages and performances. The Backyard program is the result of close collaboration with Resident Advisor, the world’s leading online media for electronic music. The family’s little ones are also treated with children’s activities in the same garden area on Sunday afternoon.

Tiivistämö (The Other Sound)

Near to Suvilahti’s hulking gas containers there is Tiivistämö, which has a rugged feel of its own. Thanks to its slightly smaller surface area, the mood in Tiivistämö is guaranteed to be intimate and snug as well as a venue for unique cultural experiences. Also, because of the more intimate space we recommend arriving early to get the best gig experience possible. This year Tiivistämö will host a program called The Other Sound, which shines a light on the gems of experimental music.

Zalando Factory

A fascinating, brand new indoor venue makes its debut at this year’s Flow Festival. The Zalando Factory, constructed inside an old sheet metal storage hall, emanates industrial flavors and assures a close-knit festival experience. Gigs from rising stars are in store here for an audience capacity of some 700 people, and we highly recommend the gig goers to arrive early to get the best gig experience possible.

Champagne Bar & Lounge

The bubbles in the tall drink that is the Flow Festival are provided by the popular and newly revamped Champagne Bar & Lounge. In addition to the sparkling libations the hottest, mostly domestic DJs around can be found here, blasting their best selections. This year the party has been moved from the thoroughfare into the tent itself for maximum danceability.

Riviera Cinema Bar

This autumn, an independent movie theatre Riviera Kallio opens it’s doors in Harjukatu, Helsinki. In celebration of their opening Riviera is bringing pop up concept ‘Riviera Cinema Bar’ to Flow Festival. Riviera Cinema Bar is not only the right choice for film freaks, but also for those who love to chill out. So, if you are looking for that refreshing drink, mind-blowing film experience, your lost friend or just a good laugh, Riviera Cinema Bar knows exactly what the happy campers at Flow Festival need.

Art Laboratory

The University of the Arts Helsinki once again brings its interdisciplinary and exceptionally large art collection to form a part of the Flow Festival experience. Although artworks will be displayed throughout the festival area, the Art Laboratory still represents the artistic center of Flow and is the perfect gallery space to encapsulate the festival’s visual character.
